Beat by Beat started with a piece I just couldn’t finish. The trauma was too raw and too deep, so I left it alone. Months later, I realized that if I was going to heal, I had to face it, and I started reimagining, reworking and covering until something new emerged. Only I would ever know what lay beneath the visible layer. But it still wasn’t finished.

I was the missing element.  So, I added my EKG, my heartbeat, my center — the thread linking every life experience.

Each piece in the series has its own rhythm to evoke a corresponding experience. A heart about to fail beats irregularly in The Cost of Perfectionism.  An infant’s EKG runs through Childish Expectations to remind us that, even as adults, we can react like a younger part of ourselves.

Our hearts know everything, even what our brains will not let us see. The sooner we embrace this, the better off we will all be.
